9-1-1 is the emergency telephone number to dial when you need help from the fire department, police department or an ambulance.
WHEN DO I CALL 911?
- A fire or if you smell smoke
- A crime, especially if it's in progress
- A medical emergency, such as someone who is unconscious, gasping for air or not breathing, experiencing an allergic reaction, having chest pain, having uncrontrollable bleeding, or any other symptoms that requires immediate medical attention
DON'T CALL 911 TO ASK QUESTIONS OR PLAY A JOKE
MAKING AN EMERGENCY CALL TO 9-1-1
1. Stay as calm as possible
2. Know the full address of where the emergency is occuring (including apartment number)
3. Know the phone number you are calling from
4. The nature of the emergency (fire, medical, crime)
5. Be prepared with details about emergency, such as a physical description of the person who may have committed a crime, or of the building where a fire is happening, or symptoms of the sick/hurt person.
6. DO NOT HANG UP until the police officers, fire fighters or paramedics arrive.
